The Morning Mumble
Did you guys know that Tumblr has an iPhone app?
It gave me a really good idea for a different blog. A specialized blog, if you will. I don’t remember much about the genesis of the idea, except that it came to me in the shower (as all my best ideas do).
Basically, it’s this: every night I open the Tumblr app on my iPhone, and leave it charging on my nightstand.
In the morning, the first thing I do is roll over and type whatever happens to be rattling around in my head, and then hit “post”. I thought it would be an interesting way to record fragments of dreams or potentially brilliant ideas that come up first thing in the morning. But mostly, I was just curious what my first thoughts were on any given day.
I’ve been doing it for a little over a week now, and I figure it’s time to share this with everybody and maybe perform a little analysis going forward. So here are my thoughts on this experiment, in no particular order.
- I was afraid I would totally forget to do this first thing in the morning (my memory is notoriously poor), but so far I haven’t missed it once.
- So far I have absolutely zero recollection of typing any of these things. I thought the process of having to formulate a thought well enough to type it out would wake me up a little. It does not.
- In fact, “first thing in the morning” is a lot more ambiguous that I would have imagined. I basically do this in my sleep, and judging by the time of posting, some time between 6 and 8 am. Again — I don’t remember.
- Sometimes I have no idea what any of these mean, but sometimes I do. I think re-reading the post can help me remember some of my dreams.
- Alternatively, if it’s not gibberish, it’s often a pessimistic thought. I wonder if it’s possible for me to start to gradually modify this behavior to think more positive thoughts first thing in the morning. Or does this really matter?
- My favorite so far: “We thought the pen was a toothbrush, but the top and the turncage only took another second to find”. If someone can explain to me what a turncage is, I will be forever grateful.
Finally, I think it would be really great if this became a community thing — if other people starting contributing their first thoughts in the morning. I think it’s a really interesting pool of data. However, I’m not exactly sure how to set up this Tumblr account to do that. I think it’s possible, but I need someone with a few more Tumblr skillz to help me through the process.
And then of course I need people to participate. Because it’s fun. Or it’s weird. Either way, it’s cooler than Foursquare.
